How does a WhatsApp QR code work?
The code contains a wa.me link with the phone number in international format and an optional text parameter. WhatsApp opens the chat; if the app is not installed, the browser offers the download.
The number must include the country code, without the plus in the wa.me path. This is a static QR code: it points to your number, not to a tracking platform. If the number changes, print a new code.
- Use international format: +39 333 123 4567.
- Keep the prefilled message short and specific.
- Test the final print with a phone that has WhatsApp installed.
- Do not promise instant replies outside business hours.
- For groups, use the group invite link instead of a number.
Do I need the WhatsApp Business API?
No. The code uses a normal wa.me link and opens the app with your number. The API is only needed for automated messaging or a verified business profile.
Can I prefill the first message?
Yes. Add the message in the WhatsApp tab. The customer still decides whether to send it, and can edit it before sending.
Does the scan show my profile?
WhatsApp shows the chat with your number and your profile photo and name if they are public. The QR code itself does not contain the profile.
Can I link a group?
A group invite is a different link. Use a URL QR code with the group invite URL, not the WhatsApp number format.
